Department To Enforce MS 1164 To Stop Sales Of Imitation Spare Parts

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 5 (Bernama) -- The Road Safety Department will enforce the MS 1164 standard to prevent the sales of imitation vehicle spare parts, especially brakes.

Its director-general Datuk Suret Singh said the new regulation would take effect possibly on July 1 next year.

The move was important, he said, following the increase in cases involving sales of imitation brakes which exposed motorists to danger.

"At the moment the MS 1164 introduced by Sirim Berhad only acts as a standard guideline for manufacturing companies," he told reporters after an advocacy campaign organised by the department for motorcyclists and drivers at Sentul Raya, Jalan Sentul here.

Suret said the department would seek the cooperation from police, government-linked companies, motorcycle associations and the Malaysian Automotive Association to enforce the rule.

He said motorcyclists and drivers planning to change their vehicles' brake system need to do so at authorised distributors to avoid being cheated.

"Many of them get their imitation parts, including brake pads, at cheaper prices and this is worrying because of their poor quality," he said.

He said distributors were given a grace period of seven months to switch to selling only original parts, after which all imitations parts would be seized.
